Did you know? ● An estimated 3.8 million sports-related concussions occur per year in the U.S ● Up to 50% of sports-related concussions go unreported ● Youth athletes are more susceptible than adults to concussions ● 15% of students report at least 1 sports-related concussion, 6% report 2+ A concussion is a neurological condition that occurs when a sudden blow or jolt of the head injures the brain. There is no single test to diagnose a concussion. A concussion can impact a person’s mental health and quality of life. Even sub-concussions (those that don’t present clinical symptoms) can result in decreased brain function and sports performance. The rapid movement of the neck during impact can also cause whiplash to occur. While a concussion occurs at speeds of 20 mph and above, it’s estimated that whiplash can occur at just 4 mph. Flexion of the neck during impact, can also increase the risk of neck injury. Upper neck injury has been shown to interfere with the nervous system and can contribute to post-concussion symptoms like headaches, dizziness, nausea, and imbalance. ● What should you do If your child has suffered a concussion or whiplash? ● How can you improve your player’s chance to fully recover from a head/neck injury? ● How do you know when it’s safe for them to return to play?
